Windows 10

Windows 10 will run out of support in October '25. Recently, there have been numerous articles highlighting issues with Windows, including intrusive software and privacy violations. Microsoft has a history of introducing bugs and ignoring user needs, and cutting off support for Windows 10 seems to push customers toward the next version of their outdated system. [1]

Hardware requirements

Despite Microsofts poor record, rumors suggest that Windows 11 requires significantly more hardware resources than Windows 10. Many devices from the past 5-10 years will still meet these requirements, but meeting the minimum does not guarantee performance, especially long-term. If you're using Windows 10 on an older device, you might not meet the new requirements.

Please consider switching to a safer system for your own security! Windows users are major targets for attackers, and Microsoft has been ineffective in protecting them. New threats and business-driven features, like the controversial Co-Pilot, often put users at risk.

Please: Don't ditch your devices!

There's a solution! 🙂️ Your devices are still perfectly fine and could likely run many more years (most devices should basically run for some decades, esp. all PCs). Even the notebook I'm writing this on is already 8 years old and the battery still lasts about 10 real working hours running on Linux.

Why Linux?

Linux is more efficient and powerful than Windows, even on older hardware, without the security risks and privacy violations associated with Windows.

The Open Source community is supportive and willing to help newcomers navigate this world without needing any technical skills - you'll neither have to understand all of the vocab we're using nor actually gain any high-level tech skills. Neither to get help from us nor for running Linux on your device!

Everybody's taste

The variety of Linux systems can seem overwhelming, but there are many options, or "distros," to suit different preferences. Most users stick to major systems, while smaller distros cater to specific needs. You can ask a local Linux supporter for recommendations or a testing opportunity - most Linux nerds will show you very willing ❤️

Or just try them on your own quickly online like in an online shop (though this is very boring).

Get Support

As with every major Windows version running out of support, the Open Source community has launched various initiatives to support users not only migrating their devices to Linux or other Open Source Systems, but also supporting them in migrating their digital lives, data, software options, and actually finding a home in the world of Linux.

And currently they are so experienced and progressed that they primarily lack users to support - so no worries about stealing anyone's time or whatever. We are already waiting for you!

Berlin

Good news: Even our super small group has some members in Berlin who still have capacities to support people with their migration! So if you count yourself in: Just let us know! You can contact the respective members more or less directly here:

Feel free to join whenever you want! Even if you are not yet sure, change your mind, have lots of questions or if you're just curious - we want everyone to be safer and we're here for you to support you becoming so.

Other places & remote

Right now preferably for people from Berlin, but we already consider remote options. You might also find people from other initiatives in the endof10.org places list.

[1] You may find a lot of fun news about Microsoft trying to move away from their own system and they actually did not consider it a major thing, but this changed meanwhile back again
